“Have no fear of perfection – you’ll never reach it.” ~Salvador Dali
No one likes to fail.
But for some people, the idea of failing is so scary that it can actually causes them to subconsciously sabotage their chances of success in more ways than one.
Do you have a fear of failure?
Here are 5 tell-tale signs…
SIGN #1: Staying comfortable
You usually only commit to “comfortable” goals or challenges… ones that you’re pretty much 100% sure you’ll hit.
SIGN #2: Keeping it private
You avoid publicly committing to new goals or challenges so that, just in case you try and fail, no one will find out.
SIGN #3: Distraction
You set aside time to work on your goals, but then you get distracted by other seemingly important tasks like returning a phone call to a friend or doing laundry… or you get last minute headaches, stomach aches or other physical symptoms that prevent you from taking action.
SIGN #4: “Preparation-itis”
You spend a ton of time preparing to take action on your goals, but then you run out of time to actually do what needs to be done.
SIGN #5: Shame
If you fail to reach a goal, you spend your mental energy feeling bad about yourself or worrying about what others may think of you… instead of on imagining what you could have done differently to reach your goal.
What to do when you have a fear of failure:
The first step is to OWN your fear.
If you find yourself hesitating on committing to a particular goal… or you catch yourself procrastinating on taking action on it, for example… acknowledge that what’s holding you back isn’t anything to do with your external environment – it’s an internal fear of failure.
When you OWN that this is what’s really going on for you, you have some power to change it!
Second, give yourself permission to move ahead and make mistakes.
Anytime you take on a new goal or challenge that causes you to stretch beyond your current limitations, chances are there’s going to be a learning curve involved and – since you’re entering into uncharted territory – you’re going to make mistakes.
Ask any of the world’s most successful people and they’ll tell you that they’ve failed dozens of times… if not hundreds or even thousands of times… on their way to achieving their goals.
So why not give yourself permission to make a few mistakes along your success journey too?
Owning your fear of failure and giving yourself the green light to move ahead and make mistakes in spite of it is the key to freeing yourself up to take action, hit your goals and live the life you desire.
Your fear isn’t real, but your goals and dreams can be if you have the courage to act.
You can do it!
