Whenever you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night, you’re most likely not getting the kind of sleep and rest you need to be having…
Which can leave you feeling tired, drained and irritable during the day.
Here are 6 tips to help you sleep better, both during the holidays and every night after:
TIP #1: Watch what you eat and drink before bed
What you eat and drink before bed can help give you a great night’s sleep or can ruin it completely.
If you eat too little, hunger pangs might wake you up in the middle of your sleep.
On the other hand, if you’re overstuffed, your body will struggle with digestion and keep you restless!
For a good night’s sleep, the best thing to do is go easy on food. It’s also a good idea to eat dinner as early as you can, so that the body gets enough time for the digestion process.
TIP #2: Schedule your sleep
Think “bedtimes” are just for kids? Wrong!
Creating a window of time in which you should hit the sack is a great way to improve the quality and quantity of your sleep.
After even just a week of going to bed around the same time each night, you’ll soon start to find that – at that same time – your body naturally begins to start energetically winding down, which will help you fall asleep (and stay asleep!) with less effort.
TIP #3: Take time to RE-LAX
If you’ve been on an adrenalin rush until the last moment before hitting the bed, you’re likely to have a disturbed night. Why? Because the body needs time to sink into a relaxed state.
If you’re looking for a night without tossing and turning, it’s important that you give yourself time to unwind before you crawl under the sheets.
Read a book, listen to some music or perhaps soak in a luxurious bath – do whatever works for you to unwind.
Also, do your best to stay away from anything that excites the nerves. Don’t include TV watching in your “winding down” activities, because the visuals mixed with the varied sounds throw your nerves into a greater tizzy than you realize!
TIP #4: Breathe well, breathe deep
It might sound crazy, but working on the way you breath can in fact do wonders for your sleep!
Do you have a tendency to do shallow breathing? If the answer’s a ‘yes,’ whenever you catch yourself doing this, take a few moments to inhale and exhale fully and deeply.
Simply by being more mindful of the way you breathe and taking the time to breathe more deeply on a regular basis, you’ll put yourself in a more relaxed state more frequently throughout the day, which will help you rest more peacefully at night.
TIP #5: Exercise (but not too much)
Hitting the gym or exercising in some way on a regular basis is a great, healthy practice. Consistent exercise has been shown to alleviate stress, which is of course one of the things that can allow you to sleep more deeply.
But at the same time, don’t go crazy!
Going overboard with your exercise regimen can actually have the opposite effect – the increased stress it can cause can act like a stimulant for the mind and body that can make it difficult for you to relax after dark.
Good sleep can be a blessing in the long run. However, for that to happen, it’s important that you take certain precautions in the short run.
A little bit of self-discipline and you too can say goodbye to groggy mornings!
