Do you have a good eye for detail?
And would you say you’re perhaps a little too critical of yourself from time to time?
If you’ve answered yes to both of these questions, chances are you may be a perfectionist!
Now, while there’s definitely nothing wrong with wanting to offer up your best to the world, the desire to have everything perfect can actually end up costing you in several ways.
The biggest way being your peace of mind.
When you’re so focused on polishing everything you do until it shines like the sun, your sense of freedom, creativity and fun can suffer – and this can lead to a whole lot of stress and lack of fulfillment in life.
(Being a recovering perfectionist myself, I know this first hand!)
So how do you do your best in a way that you’re happy with… but without stressing yourself out by trying to make it 100% perfect?
Here are 4 tips to help you right here:
Tip #1: Focus on Completion
If you’re working your way through a particular task, try to keep front and center in your mind that your end goal is not to get it 100% perfect in every way…
It’s to get it COMPLETE, so that you can move on to the next thing that’s on your list!
If you want to create more time and money freedom through starting and growing your own passion-based Internet business for example, one of the secrets to getting there is to be able to move from task to task with focused attention, purpose and velocity.
So again – ALWAYS FOCUS ON COMPLETION.
One of the best ways to do this is to…
Tip #2: Set a Deadline
Before you even get started on a task or project, give yourself a time frame by when you’re going to have it completed by.
One hour… one day… one week?
Set a reasonable time limit for yourself to finish whatever it is that you need to get done, and then do your best to stick to it.
If you find yourself starting to go over your deadline, chances are you’re tinkering with things that most other people probably aren’t even going to notice, and it’s time to stop!
Tip #3: Aim for 90%
Instead of aiming to get something 100% perfect before you feel you’re done with it, shoot for just 90% perfect.
You see, if you’re a perfectionist, chances are your standards are a heck of a lot higher than most other people’s.
What you consider YOUR 100% is very likely what most other people would consider their 150%!
So instead of shooting for 100% perfect, aim to get your projects or tasks to 90%, and then either roll them out or… if you have others working for you… hand them over to someone else to finish up FOR YOU.
I actually got this tip from my friend Cameron Herold, the author of the book “Double Double: How to Double Your Revenue and Profit in 3 Years or Less.”
Cameron gave me this 90% advice years ago, and since I took it on its really freed up a lot of mental energy for me that’s allowed me to get a lot more done in less time.
And finally…
Tip #4: Cut Yourself a Break
Try on for a moment that how you do one thing may shed light on how you do everything.
If you require everything you put out there into the world to be perfect, chances are you require the same of yourself, so give yourself some slack!
Making room for your imperfections and mistakes is the key to releasing yourself from the prison of perfect. Give yourself some breathing room.
Remember that the people who matter don’t expect you to be perfect, they expect you to be human.
Now I have a little challenge for you…
If you consider yourself a bit of a perfectionist, which of these 4 tips will you take on for the next week to help you get more done in less time AND free up more of your mental energy?
